This expression has a weird translation, “to pay a mico”. Mico being a small monkey common in parts of Brazil. It surged in the 50’s after a card’s game where players need to find matching male and female cards, but the mico card has no matching pair, and whoever keeps it loses.
Nowadays, this expression means that whoever “paga um mico” is making a fool of themselves, are embarrassing themselves, or simply being unlucky in a situation.
